Will a German shepherd be able to defend me against a pit bull and win?
I have a 90 lbs German Shepherd and we walk past a yard with a vicious pit bull. Will it win a fight against the pit bull if it chooses to jump the fence and attack?
I look at studies and they discovered that pit bulls DO NOT have locked jaws. However sometimes pit bulls jaw muscle continue to contract after tranquilize along with other breeds like Belgian Malinois. Also a German shepherd has more bite force.
Not sure but I was letting my friend’s german shepard in the house and it got loose from me and ran after a man walking a pit bull so they must be confident enough to do it.
Pit bulls have lock jaw, once the pit bull bites it can not release its jaw until its teeth meet, they are very strong dogs, I doubt a german Shepard would win but it might.
Lock jaws are a myth! Pits can apply great amounts of force when biting down but their jaws do not have a mechanism to lock them it place.
People seem to think Pits have some sort of hydraulic system inside their jaw.
Rottweilers have a stronger bite force than pits.
I don’t think a German Shepherd may be able to take on a full grown pit but if the German shepherd is aggressive enough it might be able to deter the pit.
You guys seem to think you know what you’re talking about, but it’s just like everyones else on the hype that pit bulls are some sort of viscous killing machine because you hear of illegal dog fighting and media publicating pitbulls as the the top killer. But you’re wrong, the shepherd is much bigger and has a stronger bite force, plus, it’s medium long hair puffed around the neck diminishes the accuracy of lethal bites around the neck. A pit bull should not win. A rottweiler can kill both a shepherd or a pit.
Yes, as stated by Leon, pitbulls are not the “vicious killing machine” that people think they are. German shepherds are bigger, have a stronger bite force and are more intelligent when you compare the good against good. So long as your german shepherd is strong, athletic and has a protective nature with the courage to fight, then you and your dog will be fine.
Yes! a german shepherd can defend anything against a pit bull. ive seen what both dogs can do…. and german shepherds dont get tired. i dont care what any of the wannabe thugs that fight pits have to say. ive seen with my own 2 eyes a german shepherd kill a pit bull. i was walking my german shepherd and a pit jumped a fence and tried to attack me and my german shepherd tore him up. it was a fight and the cops came. but its very possible. and pits DO NOT HAVE LOCKING JAWS! they just have strong jaws.
i dont no about a pit bull but a realy big dog did’nt no what kind it was.came charging at me when i was out walking my 7month old german shephard puppy and to my amazment my dog was on it straight away riping at the other dogs throat i ended up having to save the other dog from mine.
people think just because pitbulls are ment to fight dosent mean they can beat any dog. i know the german shepherd and the pitbulls bite force. if they fight the german shepherd will tear that pitbull like nothing
when you have a large pitbull the german shepard will not be strong enough to handle the pitbulls bite and strenth as the one in the video tested was less than 50 pounds and was a juevinile my pitbull is 88 pounds and he is 100% pure blood the bite strenth on a 88 pound pit bull would be between 350 and 450 pounds of bite(a rough estimat because a slight larger head on a dog can add alot of pounds of bite force) they need to do more test cause one test on one dog is not a consistant way to do a test in fact any professional would agree to that and that ive seen my dog fight a german shepard both never liked eachother in the first place both have a alpha male attitude to other dogs this is a big problem when my female is in heat one day in march of last year (2009) the german shepard got out of the neighbors fence and ran strait to my females kennel my male seen the dog messing with his mate so he chewed through his reinforced dog cable then attacked the german shepard i was inside playing guitar when i heard the dogs fighting it was vicious there wasnt really a way to stop them without hurting the dogs after time my dog had started to make the german shepard to get tired do to the non stop fighting the german shepard was bleeding on the neck wear my dog had him the change of the german shepards tone was changing in to more of a higher pitch of a bark my dog has alot of extra skin around his neck pitbulls were bred to have this stretchy extra skin so when the other dog bites on the pitbull it can get a strait shot at his neck just behind the jawbone i had to get something to pry them of eachother with the end of a shovel the german shepard had ran away across the other side of my house where i had put my pitbull in a kennel were my female was in at the time cause she was in heat as soon as i put him in there he was marking his territory then they were mating the next day when i ran to see if the german shepard was ok as his wounds did appear to be severe enough for stitch’s and he needed 37 of them and my pitbull needed neosporen every day and it healed in about a weak as for the gemran shepard i paid half the bill as it was neither dogs fault just the dogs instincts its about the size of the pitbull that really matters
you, kevan, doesn’t seems to know what your talking about because even a wolf cannot bite whit this strenth so it’s impossible for a pitbull.generally talking the german shepherd is more expenssive and have stronger muscle than te pitbull.secondly the pit have smaller bones than the gsd and i know someone who have a 140 lbs gsd .
I was walking my 1 year old Real German Shepherd, not Americanized German Shepherd. I know the difference. Anyway, I was walking to the park when this guy had his Staffordshire bull terrier lose, and that dog came right after my dog. My dog was rearing to fight as soon as he saw the other dog. When the fight happened, my shepherd went right for the pit’s throat and almost got it but not wanting a law suit i yanked him back as hard as I could but my dog still went for it. My dog was on a leash wearing a prong collar with me trying to yank him back with all my might and still won the fight. The dog was pretty big for a pit and my shepherd is average size. German Shepherds are truly amazing dogs and I believe that a shepherd will come out on top because of my experience and knowledge on the breed.
I think mostly it depends on how the dog was raised. Generally speaking many pitbulls may be more agressive and better at fighting, not becuase of an inherant ability, but because the type of person who would train a dog to be agressive and violent is generally more attracted to the look and reputation of a pitbull.
I’ve seen an australian shepherd damn near rip the head off dogo argentino pitbull, not because it is a tougher breed, which it definitely isn’t, but just because the way it was raised left it with a more agressive temperment. All things being even between a german shepherd and a pitbull, I think it is anyone’s guess who would win. On any given day one might triumph over the other based simply on whoever happens to get the upper hand in the fight.
But one thing I do know.. All these macho idiots out there priding themselves on their pit bulls being the baddest fighter on four legs should remember one thing, on any day of the week, even a three legged pureberd wolf could rip your little “killing machine” pitbull in half.
thanks every body i just wanted to know because me and my dad were going to get eatier one this wecond but it looks like we will be getting a German Shepard and we are thinking about getting an American bull dog when we get the German Shepard.
apparently none of you know anything. a pitbull has two jaw joints, upper and lower. when the jaw “locks” it leaves the lower joint and brings itself to the upper joint which is tighter and leaves a lot less room for movement. pits are pussies. just because mexicans fight them doesnt mean anything, the german shepherd was used by the nazi’s as attack dogs in world war two. sure two dogs can fight but you have to a beast to take on american troops with nothing but your teeth!!!
Depends on how they were “raised”. I’ve seen “stupid” pitbulls and also pitbulls trained for fights. 2nd would destroy ANY german shepherd.
My fav breed is german Shepherd tho. The pitbull is pulling a sedan with 4 people in for a long distance…
Sorry to break the news to all of you GSD folks but facts are facts. The Pit Bull Terrier has been bred for 100′s of years throughout Europe and in the US for the sole purpose of dog fighting. These dogs are canine gladiators with the skill, tenacity, pain tolerance, and strengh to take down any other “cur” breed of dog. I am not talking about these bully cross bred junk pit bulls, I mean the real deal such as Bullyson, Carver, Tudor, Nigerino, and Gator bloodline dogs. If you put a GSD in a pit with a well bred pit dog and just let the fight go on, eventually the GSD will tire out and try to jump the pit and run to save it’s own life. I do admit that a large, well-bred Rotty will give a Pit Bull a run for it’s money though, but again Rottys were bred for guarding/working and NOT fighting- the desire to fight to the death and the skill to do so is just not there…
