What kind of other dogs usually get along with a great dane?
We have a 1yr old great dane, a spayed female. We would like to get another dog that is not a dane, preferably about the size of a cocker spaniel or smaller (but not as small as a toy dog) ... We know that personalities will be the biggest deciding factor... and we would get the new dog as a pup but we dont know what kinds of breeds they tend to get along with... if you have a dane what other dogs do you have?

Brittany Spaniel,
Actually, if you’d like to see see how the largest of the toy group gets along with a great dane, you’ll have to go to YouTube and search for … big dog great dane head massage by pug … Yahoo doesn’t seem to allow copied links in their answers anymore …. but the small dog is a Pug =}
Breed doesn’t always matter when it comes to a pair of dogs getting along. What matters is your dog’s behavior (whether you can safely introduce her to new dogs at any time outside), where you introduce the dogs (not on your dog’s territory – that creates territorial aggression most of the time), and how you handle things in the home.
So long as your Dane has had no issues in the past with other dogs and you take the time to adjust her to the idea of a new puppy then she should do fine. Treat them both the same, don’t fuss over one more than the other, and you’ll d fine.

Danes are generally laid back but can be very protective. I had a Dane that loved all puppies and dogs, however I also had one that would go after other dogs if she thought they were a threat to me. Most puppies will get along with any animal they are raised with. I had a Great Dane, German Shepard, Standard poodle and three Chinese Cresteds at the same time and they were all great friends,
That depends on your dane. Is she well socialized, and like other dogs in general?
I wouldn’t get anything too small for a playmate, because they can be easily hurt by rough play. My dane’s girlfriend/ squeaky toy is a lhasa mix. She thinks she’s a rottweiler, but only weighs 22 lbs. But I do have to watch them play constantly. His favorite game is catch Rosie by the ear hair and drag her around the house.
As long as your dane is ok with other dogs, and your not too small dog has a big dog attitude (but not to the point of picking fights), then they should be fine together.
Take your girl the the local shelter and see who catches your eye and who gets along with your big baby….
