training my great dane??
I have a 1 1/2 yo great dane. He is the GREATEST dog I have ever had. He sits, stays, speaks, shakes, comes, stays etc... I don't even have to have him on a leash in my unfenced back yard or the park or where ever(i do for legal reasons when required).
OK so the only thing I cant get this great dog to too is STOP EATING OFF THE TABLE,TRASH and anything with people food on it.
I have had the dog for a week. I do not give him people food, but the previous owner more then likely did.
Yes this dog is very smart. NO does it and he backs away, but he will come back and do it right in front of me like its nothing
"donna and jesse" great site and you know your stuff.
the answer is not to simply make it so the dog cant get it. I should be able to leave a t-bone steak right in front of my dog and say one command and he will NEVER even look at it unless I say its ok. any dog can be trianed like that and I have trianed this dog a lot in a week, but I was stuck on one problem. sorry, but if you just make it so the dog cant get it then you are not trianing your dog.

He needs to learn the zen cue. It can be both cued (leave it" or uncued-as in you leave food on the table and walk away and he doesn’t touch it.)
Here is a site that shows you how to teach it to him step by step!
http://www.dragonflyllama.com/%20DOGS/Levels/LevelBehaviours/TL26Zen.html
From there you can generalize it to toys, people etc and it all helps with self-control.
Jessie and I make a game of it!
Until he learns it, you will want to prevent the behavior by keeping countertops, tables etc clear of food and trash behind doors or up high so he doesn’t get reinforced by helping himself.
Have fun!
Don’t leave food where he can reach it.
Start feeding him actual food and not commercial junk.

You will have to break him of this habit my training him
When you catch him eating it tell him NO! In a firm voice or you can get a water squirt bottle..Which ever is best for you..
This is nothing training won’t solve…dogs are smart they won’t let you see them stealing.
I think that is the biggest problem with the giant breeds. They can reach much higher than normal dogs. I have a mastiff that does the same thing. You learn not to leave things out and to "dane" proof your house. You can try the squirt bottle but when there is temptation sometimes getting in a bit of trouble is worth it to them.
dont leave it where he can get it
if he does get it say"NO!" and take it form him. if he gets to swallow it he will go back for more but if he never gets to eat it and gets yelled at he will be less likey to try again.
(water bottle dont work with my dog he jumps to bite the water (aussie 13 weeks LOVES WATER) lol he thought it was a game)
I will prolly get yelled at for this but a light smack on the snout wont kill him and will defenitly diswade him from doing it again once he learns stealing=smack
