He should be at least 3 years old.. Temperament tested, proven to be a good representative of the breed and had all his breed specific health testing done..
If your dog is breed worthy, your breeder would have told you this up front, and she would be helping you with your ‘ stud dog ‘ since she didn’t, I suspect you bought a pet that you are thinking of offering as stud.. If you love your breed, you surely wouldn’t want to be breeding pets.. Pets produce pets.. Quality dogs produce Quality dogs.. Don’t start breeding with pet quality.
Why breed when there’s thousands of animals at the shelter??
You have no business breeding if you Y!A is your first port of call for advice. Get your dog neutered.
So you want to breed your dog well then you MUST be able to answer every question correctly. If not have him neutered as soon as possible.
Is he purebred?
Has he been shown in a show ring?
Does he have any titles?
Is he a champion?
Does he have champion bloodlines?
Is all his test cleared by a vet like Hip scores, eyes etc?
Do you have a mentor?
Is he show quality?
How many titles does he have?
What registration is he registered with?
Are his parents champions? Do they have titles?
Do you have the thousands of $$ to breed him?
Are you sure your ready to lose more money then you make?
Do you have a list of people wanting your puppies now before there born?
Do you have the pedigree of your dog at least ten generations back all the way to his great great great great great grandparents?
You must have proof of pedigree right?
Do you have a puppy contract ready?
Can you tell me everything about his breed and where they originated from?
Do you have written health guarantees ready?
To the question – 2 years of age after he has earned his CH titles.
Great Danes have numerous health issues… and honestly, with the economic times, it’s best to get them spayed or neutered. The world has too many unwanted puppies as it is. Lets not add to that number.
He should be over 2 years of age. I’m still wondering why some people think that your dog has to be in a show ring before you can breed him/her. I’ll keep my thoughts about that to myself. Good luck.
Oh great, another person adding to the kill count at the animal shelter. Why don’t you take a trip down there (the shelter) and watch them euthanize some animals and see if that makes you think. Spay and Neuter your pets!!!!!!!! Stop adding to the problem!!!!!!
Please don’t breed your dog. Here are some reasons why:
Say your dog you breed her with has 6 puppies. You find a home for each of those puppies. But the new owners also want to breed. So each of those 6 puppies you sold now have 6 puppies. So in 6 yrs, how many dogs could your one male be responsbile for? In the THOUGHSANDS.
Their are 20 million dogs that go to Shelter each year in the US. Their is a Major dog over population.
So all of those dogs that your dog reproduced could end up neglected, abused, and dumped in Shelter and euthanized. You would just be adding to this problem.
This is the only way that you should even consider breeding:
-Your dog is AKC Registered
-You got your puppy from a Reputable Breeder
-Your dog is the right size, color, tempermant, etc of that breed.
-You show your dog
-Your dog won champion
-Your dog is at least 3 yrs of age
-You health tested your dog, and he passed everything.
-You study breeding a lot
-The exact same thing for the female that you are breeding him with, health tested, 3 yrs old, show dog, etc. Same as above.
-You study both your male and the female your going to breed him with bloodlines to make sure that they will make good puppies.
-You get a Breed Mentor.
-You are doing this to improve the breed
Chances are you will never do any of these things, and you had never even thought of doing these things.
Also here is what a Reputable Breeder is (Left Column) and Backyard Breeder (Right Column) Unless your going to be the one on the left colum don’t breed:

Please neutor your male. It has a lot of health benefits.
And leave breeding to the professionals.
We don’t need anymore unwanted dogs
Or backyard breeders.
If your family members, or friends want a little puppy. Have them adopt one at a Shelter.
Please don’t breed him, and neutor him!
