How much should I charge someone if they want to use my purebred male Maltese to breed their female Maltese?
I have a male Maltese (purebred) and I received a call today from someone who wants to "use" my dog to breed her female Maltese. She is not planning on selling any puppies that come out of the litter, she just wants more Maltese dogs. I have no idea what to charge her.
My dog has been tested for everything known to mankind, and he gets his shots regularly. He was purchased for 0.00 - and I have all papers, etc. for his parents and himself. The person who wants to "use" him got my number from a friend of mine that knew I had a Maltese. The call was completely unexpected - but my dog is always humping things so I thought he would enjoy this one - and I could make some money! HA HA!

how much was your dog? its around the price of a puppy.ask her how much she got her dog for,or for how much the puppies would go for.
Has your dog had the hips tested and the eyes, how old is your dog, is he proven? All these things are a factor please provide more informtion. Also how did she get your number, where from where advertising. See everuything sounds a little fishy to me. No one is going to breed their dog and keep all the puppies. Actually I would tell her to pack sand
a puppy or the price of 1 puppy
You should charge her something appropriate with your costs.
I hope that you have tested your dog to see that he doesn’t have inheritable diseases. There are also sexually transmitted diseases that can be transmitted to your dog and make him sterile.
The puppies are getting half their genes from you. You need to make sure that you’re not passing on unhealthy genes. Of course your dog has a great personality and is a great dog. But sometimes dogs have recessive health traits that can be passed on to their offspring.
You should test for:
Brucellosis
BAER Hearing Test
CERF Screening (eyes)
Hip Dysplasia
Patellar Luxation Test (OFA)
Thyroid Function Test
vonWillebrand’s Disease
If your dog passes all these tests, I’d charge something in relation to your costs to test that you’re only passing on healthy genes to the next generation.
Good luck!
IN RESPONSE TO YOUR RESPONSE: If your dog has been tested for all genetic diseases and been proved at a dog show to be perfect, then you shouldn’t charge less than $100,000. It’s not easy to find a perfect Maltese.
Don’t let her do it, the woman is either an idiot or she’s scamming you about not selling the puppies.
Good breeders would never use an unknown dog. Good breeders want to know your dog’s background, health testing, temperament etc. I’m betting that good breeders with stud dogs have turned her down, and that’s why she’s coming to you.
Besides, once your dog has been bred he’s more likely to develop aggressive behaviors and start marking around the house. Do you really want to deal with that? And if this woman doesn’t know what she’s doing, your dog could be injured.
So just tell her no.
And if you insist on going ahead, make sure her dog (and yours) are tested for canine brucellosis. It would be a shame for him to catch an STD.
Are you sure you want to breed? How did the lady know about you and your dog? Has there been any mention about the pre-breeding tests that should be done? In other words, does this woman have a clue in the world what she’s doing or is it a case of she’s got a dog and she knows you have a dog…? There are certain risks involved for your dog also that you should consider.
You didn’t give us much information. If she’s not a reputable breeder then don’t do it at all for any price.
YEAH Bassetnut!
Question.
You get a phone call from someone you don’t know, who knows nothing about your dog and wants to breed to him.
Doesn’t that entire situation set off all sorts of warning bells for you?
That by itself should answer your question.
Has your dog proven himself in shows(AKC) to be of the breed standard? Did he come from reputable breeders(probably not, since most have spay/neuter contracts for pet quality dogs)? Is he at least 2 years old? Has he been tested for any applicable health defects and STDs? If you can’t even answer those few questions, your dog is not breeding quality and should be neutered…and the woman’s dog should be spayed if she can’t answer those as well as be able to afford a stud fee or give a pup in return, have money if a c-section is needed, and be knowledgeable and have a mentor to help with the breeding process. Tell her to look for a Maltese rescue if she wants another one…what is she going to do, keep all her unaltered dogs together so they can inbreed as they please? Just because a dog is purebred, doesn’t mean it should be bred. I think I smell backyard breeders again….
She wants to keep all the puppies– that’s weird.
Plus if she doesn’t get them neutered then they will mate with each other and inbreed for generations. That’s not good at all.
She sounds too irresponsible to breed with and I would say no.
you get the price of one puppy
Listen to what ‘Bassetnut’ & ‘Dogjudge’ had to say.
They are the real thing.
