How long does it take to house train a male maltese puppy?
My neutered male Maltese is a little of 6 mos old now. Just 10 minutes ago, he came in from outside and went upstairs with me. He urinated on my carpet! I don't understand this...earlier this evening he stood at the door looking at me to let him out. He went out and did his business and came right back to the door. What's going on?

Small dogs are much harder to potty train than larger dogs. Their bladders simply cannot hold much. Take him out every 30 minutes or after he eats/plays/sleeps/drinks and keep him tied to you so you can monitor him at all times. Clean the carpet spot he peed on with Nature’s Miracle or another enzyme cleaner so he doesn’t not get confused and think that because it smells like pee he should pee there.
Most likely he couldn’t hold his pee in though. Put a bell beside the door and have him ring it each time you go out to potty, that way he can give you indication that he needs to pee. Pick his paw up and ring the bell with it then go outside, this will teach him that if he rings the bell he gets to go outside for potty time.
Is the dog house trained? Have you trained the dog?
The time to house train a dog depends on how hard you work with the dog. Take the dog out and praise him a lot when he goes potty outside. If he pees inside and you catch him. Yell NO! quickly take him outside and when he potties say what a good dog he is.
If you don’t catch him in the act do not scold him. Just take him outside.
Clean up the pee with a pet urine cleaner with enzymes in it to get rid of the smell. If he smells where he peed he’ll do it again. Don’t clean up the pee in front of him and take him out frequently.
good luck
was he out long enough? does he have any other signs maybe like a bladder infection or could he be marking territory was their other dogs or a cat or somehting in the house thats new? If he was good and is not doing this I would have him checked out by the vet..
He’s a small dog and thats what they do. Small dogs are extremely difficult to potty train. Could take years before he’ll get it right. Just be persistant and you’ll train him faster.
