How do you stop a dog from digging under the fence (chainlink and privacy)?
He is fixed and gets plenty of attention and exercise. He is a rescued dog that we have had for about 2 months. We were told he was between 1 and 2 years old. Because of many behaviors, I think he is closer to 1. He began escaping from the start through holes the neighbor's dog dug into our yard (forgot about them). When I plugged those up, he just started digging new ones. After chasing him down a few times, I just put him on a line. I hate doing that when our older dog does not need one. I have seen the suggestion of mothballs. Do you just set them out along the fence line or do you bury them a little? Thanks!!

In the past i have used chicken wire. You fold it to 90 degrees in the middle of the wire. place 1/2 on the ground and stake it down using the U type pins for landscape cloth, and staple or wire the other half to the fence. When the chicken wire is staked down you can mow over it etc and the dog cant get under it.
now, for other holes.. palce the dogs poop in the hole, they wont dig in it usually, or some have used ceyenne pepper, but I have never had to resort to that.
good luck, and thanks for rescueing,
Candice
don’t take him outside
lol…I don’t know but you just reminded me of one of my dogs from child-hood that passed on.
He used to "dig to China"…its just what he always did. In fact…its what I remember most about him.
I say you just let him dig. Makes for great memories. lol
You could try using an underground fence with a shock collar. that is probably the only thing that will work at this point to keep him in the yard.
Hide the shovel!
hello
just put them along the fence, dont burry them they dont like the smell …..i had a dog that did that, i had to put stakes and like small fencing along the bottom .It was a pain. But he eventually gave up and after a while i removed the fencing but he was older and more trained at that point..if you love your dog its worth a try….
M….
You can put the mothballs along the fence if you want to fix the fence try rebarb to put in the ground. That’s what I had to do and I still keep some handy just in case I have a dog try to dig in.
Lay rocks all around it. Supervise him closely. Provide him a secure healthy run.
carefull of the mothballs Nepthaline poisoning is not pretty.Try laying some wire mesh on the ground on the inside of your fence line, that way when he tries to dig the mesh prevents it. Give it a go it does work.
We had a dog that dug every where. We were told to try Chili powder. Sprinkle it where ever he digs and it will sting his nose a little and he won’t dig any more! You will have to sprinkle it in all of his digging spots. Good luck! And bless you for rescuing a dog!
I am not crazy about mothballs-some dogs will eat them believe it or not. Try burying some chicken wire around the inside edge of your fence. When they try to dig, they hit the chicken wire and REALLY don’t like it. Make sure when cutting to size the edges are safe-if they hit an open end of the wire they can get hurt, and that is not the point. Although I have to say after living with a digger for 10 yrs, sometimes you want to hurt them!! LOL Just kidding!
Best of luck to you!
Bury them just below the surface or get some chicken wire and lay that right up to the fence with a little dirt covering it.
