I agree with everyone here. 6 weeks is too early for your puppy. The best advice is from Kimberly. I have myself 4 poms and believe me, the crate are the best inventions in the world. Don't overuse it though. It's not a prison... My poms are actually going in there by themselves since the very first day...
I have 2 girls and 2 boys. The girls were really easy to train and I have a bit more work with the boys. But overall you need to have a routine. Same food, same hours, treats when the dogs responds well to training etc....
And really 8 hours? That's a bit cruel I think. Get a pet sitter or walker please. And wait 2 or 3 more weeks before getting him. BTW I wouldn't trust a breeder who lets his puppy go before 8 weeks. You may want to check his records.
Good luck

Crate him....not in a huge crate, or he will just go in one of the corners and pee.
You are going to have to get up early and let him out, feed and water him, and let him get rid of all of that BEFORE you crate him up for work....DON'T put any food and water in the crate.
When you get home, take him out of the crate IMMEDIATELY, and say whatever word you are going to use over and over while you are taking him outside ("potty, outside)...and praise him like crazy when he goes.
I also don't give my puppies water after about 8pm in the evening...and I NEVER just leave water down for them to drink whenever they want; you will never get him potty trained like that.
You could also think about leaving him with a pet sitter for the day.
Good Luck.

Same as any other puppy, get a book on dogs, their care and training - before you get the dog.
Not a very good idea to get a puppy when you are gone that long - not fair to the poor puppy to be alone that long and pups can't hold it for very long when they are young, hard to potty train under those circumstances.
You would be better off with a mature dog.

6 weeks old? You should really wait until he is 8 weeks old to separate him from his mom. 8 hours is also wayyy too long to be leaving a puppy home alone, so make sure you have someone home to check up on him at the very least every 4 hours. If not, I would suggest getting an adult dog... A lot of people want puppies because they're cute and they will be able to grow up to your lifestyle, but aren't really prepared to care for the puppy. Puppies are extremely hard to take care of, and if you don't properly socialize and train it, problems will arise in the future. This is how many dogs end up in shelters. Also, many adult dogs in the shelter are already potty trained. Most have also had their personalities evaluated, so you know if the dog is right for your lifestyle. Keep in mind that a dog is a 13 year commitment!
