How can I teach or stop my dog from digging holes in my back yard?
I have a 9 month old American Pitbull Terrier. I have had her since last June or maybe July. Anyway, she constantly digs holes in my back yard. How do I get her to stop digging holes in my yard? I appreciate your help.
First try adding some stimulating activities for the dog. Does it like chew toys, balls, playing in a kiddie pool? Your company and attention may be what it needs. Go outside throw a ball, work on it’s obedience skills, blow bubbles for it to catch. Pit’s need their mind and body kept active to keep them happy and out of trouble.Congratulations! You chose a breed that will make up it’s own games to keep itself entertained. Boredom is the largest cause of out of control digging. Is your dog left outside during the day? Perhaps it’s hot and trying to deal with the heat by creating a cool spot for some relief. Make certain plenty of water and shady appropriate shelter is available if this is the case. In the mean time spread out some moth balls in the forbidden areas, bury some chickenwire and cover with soil. This will allow your lawn to recover unhindered and the dog won’t like the feel of it’s paws scrathing against the wire and best of all it won’t be able to continue to make craters in your yard.

When she goes to the bathroom, put it in a hole she likes to dig in, and cover it with dirt.

unfortunately, this one is not a truly easy fix. it will need your undivided attention and effort. i have found that the only way to break a dog of digging is to stalk them when they go outside, or spy on them from inside, and as soon as you can observe the digging, surprise the dog with a loud, scary sound, such a soda can filled with pennies or ball bearings, shaken very hard a couple of times within very close ear shot to the dog. accompany the shake with a resounding, "NO LASSIE!!" or whatever the dog’s name is. this will have to be repeated until the dog can relate that digging experience to the very frightening and unpleasant experience of being scolded by the pack leader. hope this helps you!!
Dogs love to dig. Watch her behavior, is she trying to bury a fav toy or tennis ball? If so, put away her toys after you guys finish playing.
Exercise will take away some of that extra energy. Also, I love to buy rawhide with openings in the center where I can stick little treats in the middle (like cheese). She’ll work on that bone all day to get the cheese out. This gives her a diversion from digging!

Dogs usually dig due to lack of energy release try tuckering her out with agility classes it works wonders and you will meet new people too.
Dogs dig when they are bored. Give her lots of toys and exercise. If there is one place she likes to dig, trying burying a sheet of chicken wire there. She won’t like it!
If she’s digging in random places, put the dog’s poop in the hole and fill it back up- they’ll usually at least stop digging in the same place, and sometimes this will stop all digging. If she digs in the same spot all the time, even after putting poop in the hole, you can try burying a balloon, which will pop when she hits it. This helped for one of my stubborn dogs years ago. If she is digging to get out of the yard, bury the wire horse fence with 4×2 openings- it will stop the digging but isn’t as hard on her paws as chicken wire, which can actually hurt the dog’s paws.
