Some of the breeds suggested are fabulous dogs, but how much grooming and exercise are you willing to do? One of my all-time favorites is the Newfoundland, but they really are a hair factory. That, however, is the only downside to them. They are like a huge loveable bear.
Ditto for Leonbergers. The Great Dane is super and has far less shedding. I have had Irish Wolfhounds and Borzoi. The Irish are the most wonderful dog with children I've ever seen. The Borzoi was a huge love, but, again, a hair factory. I'd pick a Bull Mastiff. Wonderful temperament, but very good at protection.

Sorry to break the news to all of you GSD folks but facts are facts. The Pit Bull Terrier has been bred for 100's of years throughout Europe and in the US for the sole purpose of dog fighting. These dogs are canine gladiators with the skill, tenacity, pain tolerance, and strengh to take down any other "cur" breed of dog. I am not talking about these bully cross bred junk pit bulls, I mean the real deal such as Bullyson, Carver, Tudor, Nigerino, and Gator bloodline dogs. If you put a GSD in a pit with a well bred pit dog and just let the fight go on, eventually the GSD will tire out and try to jump the pit and run to save it's own life. I do admit that a large, well-bred Rotty will give a Pit Bull a run for it's money though, but again Rottys were bred for guarding/working and NOT fighting- the desire to fight to the death and the skill to do so is just not there...

Depends on how they were "raised". I've seen "stupid" pitbulls and also pitbulls trained for fights. 2nd would destroy ANY german shepherd.
My fav breed is german Shepherd tho. The pitbull is pulling a sedan with 4 people in for a long distance...

I have a beautiful and wonderful 18 month old Great Dane who loves to chew. I give her plenty of chew toys as well as empty plastic bottles to occupy her time. At first she would only chew on shoes, hats or books when I left her alone..( no more than a couple of hours). Now, she has started chewing them up at night when I'm sleeping. She gets plenty of exercise during the day. I take her on walks 3 or more times a day for at least 1/2 hr at a time. During these exercise times, she will run and play. She has a very comfortable bed for sleeping on at night and her toys are always near. If I forget to put everything up and away from her, they are destroyed by morning. I have never caught her in the act, so I don't know how to get her to stop. We spend every day together and I know that she has separation issues if I need to leave her alone. I usually take her everywhere with me, but some times it isn't possible. I try to leave her with a sitter when I do have to go out. I don't know what to do...

I am so tired of hearing that unregistered dogs shouldn't be bred. The people who actually believe the AKC. CKC, and BKC standards should be the only dogs allowed to be bred are the same people who have defined the size and shapes that have caused countless medical problems within breeds. So many Puppy mills are run by people who either started as members or are still members. If you want to keep telling the average person not to breed or sell there non registered puppies then I suggest all you so called reputable breeders call a moratorium on your breeding for a five year period to cut down on the dog population. Thank you
